As part of Spire Healthcare’s investment strategy, Beaumont & Cowling (B&C) were commissioned to evaluate and provide solutions for creating a fifth theatre that was urgently required.

A single storey MRI Suite had recently been completed by B&C, and this had been future proofed to take a further two storeys.

The solution was to locate a modular constructed theatre on top of the existing MRI, leaving the roof intact and linked into the existing Theatre Suite at first floor level.

This ensured that the hospital’s schedules were maintained and the risk of stoppages due to bad weather reduced.

The scheme was developed and co-ordinated by B&C, and ModuleCo were nominated as the preferred supplier.

Construction cost circa £1.1 million.

Contract period – 15 weeks including enabling works. Modular units delivered and commissioned within four weeks

Completed on time

Completed within budget

Five modular units, including dedicated plant craned in position over a weekend

Although located in Green Belt full planning permission was obtained by B&C

Out of hours working co-ordinated to ensure minimum disruption to the hospital

International UK Headquarters and manufacturing facility

When seeking to build their new International UK headquarters, Cathelco Ltd – a world-class designer and manufacturer of marine corrosion control equipment – sought an innovative landmark building solution through an architectural design competition.

Beaumont & Cowling (B&C) submitted their winning competition entry and were subsequently commissioned as architect to realise the project.

The external appearance took on a Nautical theme to reflect Cathelco’s business. A simple yet efficient plan provides the essential workshop accommodation required to undertake Cathelco’s specialised service.

Accompanying the manufacturing workshop is the main HQ office accommodation, which is split over three floors and incorporates a full height glazed atrium extending above the main entrance/reception. Office accommodation is provided by a mixture of open plan and cellular offices all accessed via the main atrium circulation space.

The external appearance is dominated by a large sail roof over the partially glazed office façade and a curved double wave form roof to the workshop giving impact and identity from the A61 in both directions. The two roofs unify the simple design of the workshop and the more complicated design of office accommodation. The building includes a glazed atrium with a curved central roof section spanned by a passive solar shading system.

Surface water run off from site had to be limited and also able to withstand a one-hundred-year flood. An underground surface water break tank and car park flood zones were designed to retain all water on site. A grey water recycling system was also incorporated and used to feed all the toilets within the building.

Construction Cost £ 2,985,000

Completed on time and within budget

Novated to contractor under design and build procurement route

When seeking to refurbish the Limes Day Centre to meet current requirements and patient needs Barnsley Hospice invited local architectural practices to submit proposals for consideration. Beaumont & Cowling’s entry was chosen for further interview and the practice selected to deliver the project.

The completed scheme is almost identical to the initial design images which had impressed the Hospice originally and stand as a testament to the hard work and careful detailing associated with the project.

The existing day centre was a galleried two storey space which had a heavy timber influence and had dated over the years. The Hospice wished to create a modern, clean openness to include an adjacent dining/sun room space with direct access to the small enclosed garden which was in a tired state.

The scheme centred around the walled garden as a focal point for the Lounge and Dining/Sun Room. The garden has level access throughout overlying a small fish pond to create a quiet area for reflection and relaxation.

The scheme also incorporated new treatment rooms, consulting room and with the introduction of a new floor over the lounge allowed for substantial additional first floor open plan office space and rest areas.

Construction cost circa £300,000 excluding VAT

Traditional construction and contract

Sixteen week contract period

High levels of installation

Frameless controllable roof lights

Solar shading

Acoustic ceiling baffles

Sliding folding glass walls.

Treatment rooms

Special designed landscaped seating areas for different patient needs

Fully disabled accessed servery area with varying height wash surfaces

Beaumont & Cowling (B&C) were commissioned as lead consultants, to produce a scheme to accommodate Sheffield Children’s Hospital (SCH) existing CAMHS Tier 3 accommodation that was split across the city in five separate locations, into one facility.

The Tier 4 scheme also had to provide accommodation for Oakwood and Shirle Hill Schools and a new Dual Diagnosis unit.

SCH found a suitable site (former Beighton Community Hospital) and a new build/refurbishment proposal was developed and signed off by SCH. Due to the size of the project SCH decided to procure the works under a P21agreement.

B&C were appointed with Costains and detailed design was undertaken which involved the refurbishment of 5,000m2 and 850m2 new build including a school sports hall and gym. Additionally, part of the building was occupied (approx 600m2) and the project was managed to ensure that occupants were required to only move once.

The building is a single storey construction of load bearing brick work cavity walls with larger span areas having steel frames, timber roof trusses and a tiled pitched roof. Natural light was a key factor and the design created new courtyards and light wells with velux style roof lights in the more difficult areas to achieve good daylight factor.

Renewable energy was provided by an air to air heat pump which achieves 20%, double the standard planning requirements of 10%.

Construction cost £6,150,000

Contract period 52 weeks

Completed eight weeks early

The whole building was designed to achieve a BREAM rating of ‘very good’

CO2 emissions were reduced by modernising the existing plant and lighting by in excess of 20%

Running costs were reduced by 10% in spite of an extra 850m2 of space being created

Project now occupied.

As part of Spire Healthcare’s (formerly BUPA) bid for NHS work in the North East, Beaumont & Cowling (B&C) were commissioned as lead consultants to look at the expansion of hospitals in the Tyne region. Washington Hospital was to be extended to incorporate a fourth theatre suite and to increase accommodation.

A new day case, 12 bay bed pod ward was required to accommodate the increase in patient numbers, together with additional car parking, sub-station and generator to cope with increased demand. The new bed pods were designed based on previous experience and in advance of the new HBN being issued in this area. All works were to be carried out while the hospital continued to function

A reasonable amount of internal planning had to be undertaken as Health Care Commission guidance changed during the course of the project, as did client requirements from the original brief.

Although the initial budget cost increased due to the changes, the project was delivered
on time. Additionally, during the course of the project, there were also four changes in hospital managers and directors, the contractors were taken over in mid-term, an the site agent left unexpectedly – all of which meant a considerable amount of additional supervision and co-ordination was required.
